How to Modernize Learning & Development to Allow for Talent Mobility

As a hiring manager, your goal is to hire top talent. You want employees who can grow with the company and in a perfect scenario, shift between positions without you having to hire someone else. But when it comes to improving talent mobility, the pieces need to fit together perfectly. In addition to talent management, here’s what you need to do to enhance learning and development within your company.

Create Personalized Experiences

Even though your corporation works as a unit, the employees are all different. Each has a unique way of learning. Learning and development strategies need to have a personal touch. People thrive when they’re in a learning environment that enhances their learning style. You should ask about their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to learning. You also need to inquire how you can make it more personalized as well. Utilize technology to create specialized courses easier with on-demand courses and videos.

Collaboration Is Key

Workforce development is more than telling people what to do. It’s a genuine collaborative effort that encourages employees to share what they know in a non-judgmental way. Collaborative tools, like forums and company discussion boards, can give your top talent a safe place to exchange their thoughts and learn from one another. You can also organize Zoom sessions where you and your staff get together to discuss objectives as group and individually. If you are also wanting to advance in your career, you might want to consider returning to college. Companies look for upper management talent that’s completed an MBA, so having it under your belt isn’t a bad idea. You can apply for a student loan through a private lender to minimize the interest payments over the course of the loan. Repayment options are usually more flexible as well.


Gamification is a process that has seen a lot of success when it comes to pushing talent mobility. It implements gaming-like elements, like a point system, into the course. Not only does this give your employees something to strive for, it also promotes a healthy competition as well as an incentive to work their hardest. However, you need to implement this tactic carefully. It may be a way to make the employee's job and learning experience more fun, but that's not the main focus. Gamification is all about seeing results, acquiring feedback and seeing what your employees are truly capable of. You can go about this various ways, but this does depend on the position in question.

For example, you can give your social media manager a questionnaire or your technician a time challenge to complete. To further incentivize gamification, throwing any sort of reward into the mix isn't a bad idea either. You could make the reward a gift card of the employee's choice or tack on a bonus to their paycheck. Another way to implement a reward system is through milestones. Once an employee reaches a certain milestone, they'll be entitled to the designated reward. In turn, this gives them something to strive for.
